Kiwi students shine at HRI

Meet the team

In December 2016, HRI welcomed eight talented researchers from New Zealand to take part in a summer scholarship at the HRI.

Launched in Summer 2016/17, the 8-week scholarship provides high-achieving and promising Kiwi students the opportunity to work on a medical research project directly related to cardiovascular disease, expand on their skills and knowledge and be mentored in a world-class research institute.

Hear what our eight talented researchers thought of their time at HRI:

Bailey McIntosh

"I've only ever been exposed to a diasnostics laboratory so the freedom and the things you can do on your own in the lab here has been really eye-opening."

Bridget Velasco

"I've learned that perseverance and diligence is such a such a good thing to have as a researcher. And particularly if you get bad results, it's not necessarily wrong results. It might tell you something that you weren't thinking about before."

An exciting new treatment for very high blood pressure is on the horizon after a world-first discovery by Heart Research Institute scientists, who have uncovered a brain chemical instrumental in triggering hypertension, the so-called silent killer responsible for the deaths of thousands of Australians each year.

Scientific minds coming together

HRI researchers Dr Mary Kavurma, Associate Professor Simone Schoenwaelder, Dr Amelia Tomkins and Bradley Tucker attended the ANZMS and AVBS Conference 2017 to share and discuss the latest research in the field.
